At the start of the spring 2011 semester, none of the students in Sister Diane Zigo’s Literacy Development in the Content Area class at Le Moyne College could point to Gulu on a map. But after spending the semester writing and producing textbooks for students there, the city in northern Uganda holds a very special place in their hearts.

Sister Laura Bufano, a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for over 40 years, said she fell in love with music and God at the same time.
She grew up in Syracuse and attended St. Peter’s Church on James Street and graduated from St. Vincent de Paul High School. Sister Jerome Joseph at St. Vincent’s discovered Sister Laura’s musical gift and she’s been embracing it ever since. “My decision to enter the congregation was inspired by the sisters who taught me,” Sister Laura said. “They were alive, human. They laughed, they cried and they danced.”

Sister Mary Mark Mahoney grew up on a farm in Minnesota, taught grade school for 35 years, and helped start a house of prayer in Stillwater. But it wasn’t until the Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet retired at the age of 84 that she discovered her greatest passion. When Sister Mary Mark spotted an ad in National Catholic Reporter asking for volunteers to correspond with death row inmates, she thought to herself, “I could do that.”
And so began a prison ministry that has lasted 16 years and counting.
